Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre is a nostalgic gem nestled along Upper Serangoon Road, serving the Hougang and Serangoon communities since the early 1980s. With its distinctive architecture and strata-titled layout, the centre comprises multiple interconnected blocks housing a mix of retail units, offices, and residences. Though modest in scale compared to newer malls, it retains a unique charm that appeals to those seeking a more personal and eclectic shopping experience. This Serangoon shopping centre is known for its quirky boutiques, vintage finds, and independent businesses that offer products and services not commonly found in mainstream malls.
The atmosphere at Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre is warm and community-oriented, often evoking a sense of nostalgia among long-time visitors. It is a place where one might stumble upon hidden treasures, engage in friendly conversations with shop owners, or enjoy a hearty local meal at one of its humble eateries. Despite its age, the centre continues to be a lively and characterful destination, offering a refreshing alternative to the polished uniformity of modern retail complexes. Its enduring presence is a testament to the value of authenticity and the charm of neighbourhood commerce.
1. Upper Serangoon Shopping Center is an old shopping center that was completed in 1980. The mall has certainly seen better days, and walking through it (pics below were taken on a weekday morning around 7.45 am) is like taking a trip back in time to the 1980s. A distinctive “old shopping mall” smell hits you in the nostrils along with the strong air-conditioning as you enter. USSC’s most enduring businesses are the vegetarian restaurant on level 3 and the Teochew restaurant in the basement. Yun Nam Kitchen on level 3 sees a healthy lunch crowd – try the teh ($1.20), prawn noodles ($5) and bak kut teh noodles (only available on Fridays). Coming back in recent years made me realise how USSC has changed, and also remained stuck in time, since I first visited it two decades ago in the early 2000s. The school uniform supplier and Chinese art painting shop I remember from back then are no longer around. I like to pop in every now and then whenever I pass by the area – even if only to soak in the atmosphere and be reminded of my younger days. In a country where the majority of shopping malls are managed by REITs and have the usual few tenants, to have a strata-titled mall like USSC is increasingly rare. If you are looking for a nostalgic throwback to the past, drop by USSC and support the old-timer businesses there.
2. Deserves 5 stars just for being frozen in time since 1981.
3. Good service, great drinking and fun ❤, good place to recommend.

A quaint mini mall that sits on a small road, or u can call it a picturesque mall, or whichever u define it, as it is has that alluring feel to it. 😀 It has quite a few restaurants in it and has concierge at level 2, which sits facing the escalator leading to the rooftop. A very well maintained mall despite the looks and many aesthetic works of art around. All u need to do is jz slowly walk and breathe while observing everything around. U will realise that there are creative simple designs that makes the place pleasing to look at. The layout is simple with 4 floors to boast at the very least. There are practical and creative designs of art outside as well. Walk along the walls and u will realise this, something that some may not have realised. Talk a slow walk n chill with friends on d coolness of this mall. It is definitely not the best of malls, but it serves the purpose fully. Worth a visit at least once..
